The Care Certificate – Awareness of Mental Health, Dementia and Learning Disabilities course helps new and existing care staff develop the knowledge to support vulnerable individuals safely and respectfully. In just one day, learners build confidence in communication, person-centred care, and understanding the impact of these conditions, forming part of their Care Certificate journey.

Description

Deliver care with dignity, compassion, and understanding

This course forms part of the Care Certificate standards and introduces learners to the key principles of supporting individuals with mental health conditions, dementia, and learning disabilities in health and social care settings.

It equips staff with the knowledge to deliver compassionate, person-centred care while understanding the legal, ethical, and professional responsibilities involved.

Learners will explore the impact of these conditions, strategies for effective communication, and the importance of dignity, respect, and inclusion in everyday care practice.


Course Structure

  • Duration: 1 day (6–7 hours learning)

  • Delivery: Virtual classroom or face-to-face training

  • Level: Care Certificate standard unit (non-regulated qualification)


Course Content

Learners will cover:

  • Introduction to mental health, dementia, and learning disabilities

  • The impact of stigma, labels, and discrimination

  • Supporting independence, dignity, and choice

  • Effective communication and person-centred approaches

  • Understanding legislation and duty of care

  • The importance of safeguarding and protecting vulnerable individuals


Assessment

  • Knowledge assessed through participation, discussion, and/or short written tasks

  • Workplace observation may also form part of assessment (if required for Care Certificate sign-off)


Certification

On successful completion, learners will receive a Care Certificate component certificate confirming their achievement of this standard.

Progression Pathway

This course contributes to the Care Certificate, the benchmark for induction into care roles. Learners may then progress to:

  • Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Mental Health Problems

  • Level 2 or 3 Diploma in Adult Care

  • Specialist training in dementia care, learning disabilities, or mental health support
